Back in 2017 A teenager passed away in Mexico after getting a love bite

Love bites, or hickeys, can actually have detrimental effects on your health, but not many people know this.

Julio Macias Gonzalez,from mexico passed away from a stroke after a love bite from his girlfriend caused a blood clot in his neck.

While this is extremely rare, it is not entirely unheard of a woman from New Zealand had a hickey-induced stroke that left her with paralysis of her left arm, back in 2010.

Love bites are giving to the soft, tender parts of your skin, especially your neck. When you get an intense love bite, the capillaries beneath the skin break causing an ugly bruise that stays for weeks.

Hickeys can also lead to deep vein thrombosis, which can lead to a pulmonary embolism.

Dying from a hickey is more than likely not going to happen to you, but Popular Science says that venous blood clots kill more people each year than breast cancer, car crashes and AIDS put together, every year.

Love bites can also pass the oral herpes virus.

If you get a hickey from someone who has an active cold sore, they may actually transfer the virus onto you. However, people with cold sores should be engaging in any sexual contact of any kind while it is still active.

To avoid getting hickeys so easily, up your iron intake as people with iron deficiency tend to get hickeys far easier. The key for getting rid of hickeys, even though there is no cure, is to stay hydrated and eat well.
